UPVC Door Hinge Repair

Butt Hinges

A damaged hinge pin is another common cause of loose latches. The best method to fix a worn hinge is to replace the hinge pin. You can buy new hinge pins at hardware stores or online. Install the hinge pin replacement by taking the original pin off and replacing it with a new one.
Rebated Hinges
Rebated hinges are a popular choice for doors that must sit inside door frames which have been constructed around them. The hinges are set within the frame so that they don't touch the door sash when open and are secured to the edge of the door using screws. These types of hinges are suitable for uPVC, timber and aluminium doors and are available in a variety of sizes to suit different widths of door sash.
These hinges are an excellent solution for doors that require more adjustment than standard butt hinges provide. They are a great option for doors equipped with chamfers that don't permit the use of traditional butt hinges. They have caps made of metal and are adjustable in three planes, and support up to 60 kg per pair. They are simple to install and are suitable for right or left-hand doors RH/LH.
If your rebated door hinges are squeaking or squeaking, a simple and inexpensive solution is to spray them with an aerosol silicone grease or lithium. This will stop the squeaking temporarily but is not a long-lasting solution and may wear off over time.
A more permanent solution is to drill out the screw holes and then fill them with wood filler. This will keep the screws tight and give you a solid grip on the door. You can also try using toothpicks to fill the holes and strengthen them.
Another alternative is to use a dowel from wood that is the same size as the screw hole. Drill a hole large enough to accommodate the dowel. Glue the dowel in and then chisel it in when set. Then, screw the hinge back in place.
I have some old doors that had the hinge recesses for the hinges drilled too deep and splinted. They are quite substantial frames that are buried in the walls of an old structure, so replacement isn't really an option. Could the frame be cut, and a new piece of wood joined to create an entirely new hinge recess that would better hold screws? Flag Hinges
uPVC hinges can be used to replace old hinges or to change the look of the door. Many of the newer uPVC door models come with hinges that can be adjusted to slimline. They are much easier to shut and open, and more heat resistant. These hinges require less maintenance and are less susceptible than older hinges to be draughty. However, just like any hinge, they can still wear out over time and require adjustments.
If your uPVC doors don't close correctly, it could be that the frame isn't straight. You must correct the frame before you can adjust hinges. Otherwise, the latch won't get caught on the strike plate and will not close the door.
You can adjust the butt hinge by loosening the screw in the middle of the hinge. Then, turn the top or bottom adjustment screws to allow for sideways movement. To access a compression screw on the top of the device, you'll have to take off the cap. The screw adjusts the height of the hinge within a range of up to 2mm.
Flag hinges are more adaptable than butt hinges, and can be adjusted both vertically and laterally. They are less susceptible to draughts since they have a smaller lip on the hinge. They are found on some older uPVC doors and can be replaced with modern T hinges.
To fix a hinge with a flag you can use wood glue, wood filler or epoxy to fill in any gaps. Once the filler has dried, sand the hinge smooth and then apply a coat of paint to it. Contact a hardware store for advice if not sure of the kind of filler you need to choose. You can also opt for fillers with more gloss to give the door a polished look. You can also cover the gap with wood veneer. This option may be somewhat more expensive however it will make your door appear new.
Recess Hinges
Using a chisel, cut an indentation on the front of the door frame. It should fit the dimensions of the hinge you're installing. Once you've made your cut, you'll have to scrape the wood and clean the area using a damp cloth. This will ensure that the new hinge will sit flush against the surface.
Once you've cleaned up the area, screw in your new hinges and test to see how the door works. Check that the sash is in alignment with the frame both on the top and the bottom. If there are any gaps, or if the sash catches on the hinge, it could indicate that your uPVC doors require to be readjusted.
You can buy a spirit level at most hardware stores for an affordable price. Simply place the level on top of the door and if there are height differences between the frame and the door, this is a sign that the hinges must be adjusted.
uPVC hinges can be adjusted using an Allen Key located on the doorside of the hinge. Turn the key clockwise to tighten, or counter-clockwise to loosen (lower). Repeat this procedure until the door is able to open and close smoothly with an even spacing and no creaking noises.
There are three main kinds: Butt, Flag, and Rebated. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages Be certain to research them thoroughly before making your final choice.
